Mazingira challenge is an annual inter-university student competition organized by East African Wildlife Society and Kenya Forest Working Group. The purpose of the competition is to promote environmental stewardship among the youth of Kenya. The participants are rigorously evaluated on their knowledge of contemporary environmental issues and their own innovations for solving environmental problems in Kenya. Students of the University of Nairobi, under the auspices of Chiromo Environmental Awareness Club (CEAC) and the School of Biological Sciences, have been participating in the annual competition during the last five years (since 2011). The students have participated and won individual trophies every year in different areas of competition. In the 2015/2016 academic year, the University of Nairobi students won one individual trophy and the overall trophy, both of which the College of Biological and Physical Sciences will retain for good. Chiromo Environmental Awareness Club is housed in the School of Biological Sciences courtesy of the school’s Director, Prof. Paul Ndegwa and is mentored by Prof. Nathan Gichuki and Dr. Dorcas Sigana.
