SAVE THE ELEPHANT CAMPAIGN

The Chiromo Environmental Awareness Club successfully did a sensitization and awareness creation campaign on 12th June, 2013 on the effects of the slaughter of elephants in Kenya. It made clear its stand by saying no to poaching and standing up against illegal trade in ivory. The event was attended by Dr. Akunda Director School of Biological Sciences who represented the Principal College of Biological and Physical Sciences. The guest speaker Mr. Viraj, from team of Save the Elephants Campaign, Elephant for Kenya Campaign and Kenya Wildlife Services, did a high profile presentation explaining into detail why it is important to conserve the elephants

The campaign was then preceded by a follow up event held at valley arcade off Gitanga road, on Thursday, June 13th from 11:00am to 8:45pm. The occasion was organized by TED XValleyArcadeLive  (x=independently organized TED event),TED is an annual event that brings together the world’s leading thinkers and doers to share ideas that matter in any discipline – technology, entertainment, design, science, humanities, business and development . It was graced by the speaker of the day, Dr. Paula Kahumbu, world renowned conservationist who passionately demonstrated facts about the elephant, how it’s related to humans and well researched and reliable data about them. To mention but a few 30,000 elephants were killed across Africa the year 2012. The other disturbing fact and sad reality is that Kenya is an international hub of ivory trafficking despite elephants being at the core of our economic aspirations. Finally she posed the big question WHO IS RESPONSIBLE? And launched the campaign dubbed “Hands off Our Elephants”
