New Student Leaders Sworn In at Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Nairobi

On Thursday, March 28, 2024, the University of Nairobi witnessed the swearing-in of new student leaders at the Taifa Hall. This ceremony followed the Faculty and Campus Students' Association elections held virtually on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, and the Council elections conducted on Thursday morning.

The Faculty of Science and Technology emerged victorious team was Team Mwaniki, with Joseph Muia Mwaniki taking the helm as the Chairperson. The newly elected team comprises Sarah Awinja as the Vice-Chair, Willis Owino Otieno as the Secretary-General, Samuel Wanjara Macharia as the Treasurer, Wilson Jemimah Nosim as the Sports & Social Welfare Representative, Ndambuki Joseph Mwanzia as the Representative for Persons with Disabilities, and Emmanuela Samuel Udwar as the Internal Students Representative.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Prof. Collins Odote, the Chair of the UNSA Independent Electoral Commission, announced a significant increase in voter turnout, reaching 45.7% compared to 38% in the previous year. Notably, the Kenya Science campus recorded the highest voter turnout of 78%.

Reflecting on the journey since 2022, Prof. Odote highlighted the remarkable increase in student participation from 2022 to 2024. However, he acknowledged the challenge faced by the commission in working within tight timelines and urged the management to consider appointing commissioners earlier for the next electoral cycle.

The Commission of Administrative Justice (CAJ) and E-LOG were commended for observing the UNSA 2024 elections, ensuring a fair and transparent process.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama, congratulated the winning teams and pledged to collaborate with the UNSA student leaders to conceptualize and implement solutions that will maintain the University of Nairobi's status as a top-notch institution that transforms society.

Additionally, Prof. Kiama expressed his commitment to seeking ways to increase work-study opportunities, delivering innovative solutions to the industry.

The Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Nairobi looks forward to working closely with the newly elected student leaders to foster academic excellence, promote student welfare, and contribute to the overall growth and development of the institution.
