This year, Kenya will be joining the Global Community in marking the 10th International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action (ILLPWA), between the 23rd and the 29th of October 2022 under the leadership of UNEP and the World Health Organization.
The focus this year’s is Enhancing Efforts Towards the Elimination of Lead Paints
Kenya is one of the eleven-member countries on the advisory council of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint under the representation of Dr. Faridah Hussein Were in the Department of Chemistry of the University of Nairobi. It is for this reason that the Dept of Chemistry has been coordinating these activities with the involvement of key stakeholders and partners geared toward phasing out lead paint. Basco Paint Products Ltd has been our main sponsor.
The week builds on the success of phasing out the use of leaded fuel and anchors on the
achievement that Kenya has made in establishing the standard to regulate and phase out lead in paint in the East African Community. The event will also highlight the efforts of various industries and partners in preventing lead exposure and accelerate the commitment towards compliance and enforcement of the paint standards.
The Department has therefore organized the activities for the week that will culminate in a one-day event that will start with an Opening Ceremony that will Flag off a procession involving about 500 participants on a designated 10 km route to carry out awareness within the CBD.
The event will take place on Saturday, 29th October 2022 at the Department of Chemistry starting at 8.00 am and ending at 1.00 pm.
